Links to Scottish places, attractions and events that our members have been to in Scotland and which they would recommend to family and friends.
Carriden House   (B&B; Bo'ness)
Members stayed here in August, 2011. Beautiful, large stone home with exterior features that resemble a castle in some parts and a more traditional mansion in others - some parts of the structure date back to the early 1600s. Set back on a farm lane, away from the hustle and bustle of of the highway. Proprietors Barbara and Graham Blackbourn.
Glenotter   (B&B; Stranraer)
Members stayed here in August, 2011. Lovely art decco home. Check out the Monkey Puzzle tree in the front yard! Proprietors Sylvia and Graham Holden.
Kiltaraglen House   (B&B; Portree)
Members stayed here in August, 2011. Secluded, yet close to the town center. Just a pleasent, 10 minute walk to the center of the beautiful port town of Portree, on the Isle of Skye. Proprietors Kevin and Pam Simmister. (Self-catering accommodations available also.)
National Trust for Scotland   (Self-catering; Various Locations)
Members have stayed in NTS properties on several occasions. The National Trust for Scotland not only manages and oversees historical buildings and sites around the country, they own and rent self-catering accommodations of varying sizes and occupancy levels. Most are rented from Saturday-to-Saturday providing you with a comfortable base of operations to return to each evening. (Remember fellow Americans - and Texans in particular - Scotland is a geographically small country compared to ours. Therefore, you can make out-and-back day trips from a central location and see numerous places / attractions with ease.) Accommodations come complete with a dishwasher, a washing machine and a fully equipped kitchen. Bring yourself, your clothes and some food, and you're ready to enjoy a relaxing week in a comfortable "home away from home" setting.
St. Anthonys   (B&B; Fort William)
Members stayed here in August, 2011. The B&B sits up above the city's center, with a beautiful view of Loch Linnhe from the dining area. Proprietors Gill and Dave Ferguson.
Activites / Attractions / Events:
Edinburgh Tattoo   (Military Band Performance; Edinburgh)
Members have attended this event numerous times. Known officially as the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, this seasonal attraction runs nightly for three weeks, beginning in early August of each year. If you enjoy pipes and drums and the pomp and circumstance of a kilted, regimental band (several of them!), then you'll love the Tattoo! Outstanding performances from some of Her Majesty's best musicians combined with guest performances by bands from around the world, make for a wonderful evening of music and pagentry. Secure your seats early... this is a very popular event!
Jacobite Express   (Train Ride; Fort William to the port of Mallaig)
Members rode this train in 2004 and 2011. Better known to Harry Potter fans the world over as the "Howarts Express," this train is pulled during the warmer months of the year by a coal-fired, WW-II vintage steam engine (be sure to check the schedule) with passenger cars from the same general era. One of the engines and various cars have been featured in the Harry Potter moives, as has the beautiful, 21-arch, single track bridge crossing the Glenfinnan river. With luck you'll be seated in a car with the Hogwarts logo on the side! A wonderful (and historic) ride for young and old alike.
Rosslyn Chapel   (Historic Chapel and Architectural Site; Roslin)
Members visited Rosslyn in August, 2011. Brought to the forefront by its role in the movie "The Da Vinci Code", this 15th century chapel is being painstakingly (and lovingly) restored and preserved for future generations to see and to treasure. The stone carvings inside and out, are simply amazing!
